Dell is losing out in all directions, but HP? They just became the #1 worldwide PC manufacturer again after increasing sales 6%. Dell meanwhile lost 6% last quarter.
I know a loss of 6% and a gain of 6% aren't the same numbers unless you start at a common baseline, but it doesn't take a genius to work out where most of Dell's lost sales went.
HP is doing very well with its Pavilion multimedia laptops. Both of my roommates have one. HP is aiming for the consumer and a big retail presence in stores like Best Buy so they are actually more direct competitors to Apple now than Dell is.
Dell's problem is their business model has always been based on 2 things: 1) customization, and 2) low price. Everyone does customization now, and the problem is that if you are competing in price there is *always* someone that will beat you in price down the road. If you think Dell is going downhill now, wait until Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers really start putting pressure. Since Apple's business model is based on innovation, it is actually much more likely to still be in a strong position 10 or 20 years down the road than dell is...

Depending on how useful the service is, one hundred dollars a year would probably be worth it.

I just did that, and loaded one of them into Photoshop for a little measurement. Here is what I got:
Image (http://www.marulla.com/files/thickness.png)
That ones not really too accurate due to the camera angle...its on a slope.
Also just run this through myself.
I get 79.2 on the White iPhone and 78.9 on the black. Given that I also had to level the image that sounds about right. Theres no way you can call your or my results accurate from a wonky photo however as photoshop attempts to enhance an image when rotating to level, thus distorting the original.

It's not really outdated in the sense that it is still the best and latest iPhone out there. But I know what you are getting at.
Well I think I would be an unwise consumer to pay full upgrade price for old tech. If there is no iPhone in June, I might give Apple a little time to tell all of us whose contracts are up what their plan is, but I doubt I'm going to be willing to hold onto an old phone long enough to see what Apple has in store. At that point I'll give serious consideration to another platform, but I'll resist it as much as possible because I do enjoy Apple hardware. I will not, however, tolerate horrible update cycles and pay full price for them. If that's going to be Apple's game, I won't be playing.

I believe that Amazon uses 256 kbps variable bit rate compression for their MP3 Download store. Why MP3? The reason is simple: it allows maximum compatibility with all music players that can play back MP3 files out there. Sure, Amazon could use the AAC 256 kbps VBR format, but outside of the iPod support for the AAC format is iffy at best (only the higher end players from Sandisk's Sansa line and Creative support AAC).

It seems that nobody ever likes anything successful.. Look at poor mcdonalds, coca cola,Ford and now apple and its ipod.... All the biggest comapanies always get in trouble. BMW and their idrive, ford and the firestone blowouts, apple and hearing loss... while dont people stop being jealous and peee off.
Ford and GM problems are their own fault - they don't produce fuel efficient cards - in north america - other ( non u.s ) manufacturers do - and they are reaping the benefits - whilst oil prices are high.
Once again the drones at Microsoft can't come up with anything new so they spend all their money trying to muscle in on something someone else had the vision to create. I hope they fail big time.
By the time M$ get any sort of marketshare Apple will be onto something new and innovative that that Big Bill will have to throw even more $$$ down the drain to catch up.
Jobs must be laughing his A*** off, he's forced M$ to create something that's going to lose them money, whilst Apple turns a tidy profit on each iPod sold!
What, your saying that Apple should have the MP3 market to itself, no one else can try and muscle in - its called competition, and competition is heathly. Apple entered the MP3 market when people thought it was already saturated... this is a case of double standards, in afraid. :-\

Not sure why people think Apple is the bully here. Have you not seen the comparison between the Samsung phone and the iPhone? We even have sales people telling customers the Samsung phone is "like an iPhone"..

OK, I have two problems with this being anything more than just a glitch.
First, it's for developers to define which devices their apps are compatible with. When Apple does bring out a new device, it has never updated the compatibility of existing apps AFAIK.
Second, if there was a new device or iOS>OSX functionality on the way, updating the App store to show compatibility would have been one of the very last stages before (or even after) launch. As we've had NO indication or rumours of either of these things being forthcoming, I really can't imagine a major launch by Apple within the next few days.
It's nice to have something to get excited about, but I think the only relevance in this placeholder is the ix to the IX Legion, i.e. it'll simply vanish without a trace.

Three to five years to pay off? In that time frame Apple will be miles ahead of Microsoft, as usual. Actually, Apple is currently miles ahead of Microsoft, go figure.

It's also likely to lead to a Douglas Adams-esque end-of-the-world pandemic scenario! Euuuh!
As DNA prophesied:
"A loud clatter of gunk music flooded through the Heart of Gold cabin as
Zaphod searched the sub-etha radio wavebands for news of himself. The machine was rather difficult to operate. For years radios had been operated by means of pressing buttons and turning dials; then as the technology became more sophisticated the controls were made touch-sensitive you merely had to brush the panels with your fingers; now all you had to do was wave your hand in the general direction of the components and hope. It saved a lot of muscular expenditure of course, but meant that you had to sit infuriatingly still if you wanted to keep listening to the same programme.
[...]
The music swirled and dived for a moment. Another voice broke in, presumably Halfrunt. He said: Vel l, Zaphods jist zis guy you know? but got no further because an electric pencil flew across the cabin and through the radios on/off sensitive airspace. Zaphod turned and glared at Trillian she had thrown the pencil."

What kind of clothes are you buying?
I've got a bunch of Banana Republic and L.L. Bean.
A few Lacoste and Polo and Burberry items as well.
The only things for me that don't last are jeans/slacks. I do go through those a bit faster, probably around the 2 year mark.
IMO it's all in the quality of the clothing. Back in college I would buy Tommy Hilfiger, Old Navy, and Nautica and that stuff would barely last a year. Really cheap stuff.
I prefer stuff along the lines of my Banana Republic and L.L. Bean button down shirts. No logos or emblems on the outside of the shirt, and real good quality that holds up for years.

For Mac users, why would we want to install Vista-(via BootCamp) and then also use it under virtualization?
What situation is there that you would want to run the same OS on the same box, one natively installed and one in virtualization?
well I would want to install Vista in bootcamp to play games... and the same one under parallels to be able to do simple tasks in windows without having to reboot OSX... :-) until parallels comes up with that 3d enabled version we'll have to install it twice ;-)

... I think today, September 14th, was made just for me.
Picked up the Halo: Reach Legendary Edition from Best Buy at midnight.
http://www.gameguru.in/img/halo-reach-legendary-edition-01.jpg
Already beat the campaign. It was freaking awesome. There's definitely a few things I'd change; but the whole game is just filled with fan service.
Then, this afternoon I finally found a copy of Phantasy Star Portable 2. It came out today, but almost no stores are carrying it. Which is a shame, because I absolutely LOVE the Phantasy Star Online series. I've already put over 10 hours into the demo alone.

... and finally a bunch of $2.50 copies of KOTOR on Steam as gifts to my friends and some online buddies. It's my favorite game of all time; and for $2.50 EVERYONE should play through it.
